Harrison studies how Zora Neale Hurston and Mary Austin used ideas about anthropology and folklore to shape more or less self-consciously modernist fictions. Both, Harrison argues, devise narrative strategies that question the scientific, objective concepts of knowledge and representation derived from social science models, such as the work of Hurston's teacher, Franz Boas.
