The schism of 1080, which followed Pope Gregory VII's second excommunication of Henry IV, provoked a climate of seemingly insurmountable intransigence. The ways in which the law seemed to reflect, or at least respond to, the problems made manifest by the schism are discussed as seen in the two final books of Anselm of Lucca.
