In her introduction to the first edition of this collection of essays devoted to Joss Whedon's programs Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, editor Roz Kaveney confessed that she "had never been seduced by a television show before" she first encountered Whedon's titular female hero (1). The collection begins with Kaveney's own lengthy introduction, which addresses the series' structural and thematic concerns to demonstrate how Whedon's fictional universe "developed its particular strengths, its complex clustering of characters and the solid formalized architecture of its seasons" (4).
