  • [...] we actually provide evidence linking mass privatisation with unemployment in table 2, where we show that mass privatisation was associated with an increase in unemployment of more than 60% in the former Soviet countries. [...] our findings in central Europe are consistent with Earle's work, but they do conflict with his counterintuitive findings from Russia and Ukraine, which suggest that privatisation of overstaffed and inefficient state-owned enterprises further increased employment and decreased productivity.1 Our findings in the former Soviet countries, however, agree with those from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development2 which show that domestic privatised firms were more likely to reduce employ ment or undergo major restructuring than state-owned enterprises.
