Since the international community started pouring billions of dollars into the HIV/AIDS fight in Africa earlier this decade, new and lucrative job opportunities have emerged for doctors and nurses with nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and foreign aid agencies. The Health Services and Systems Program, funded by the US, for instance, is financially supporting the placement of doctors in 19 rural districts; it has also renovated housing for medical staff in Zambia's remote Luapula Province in an effort to improve retention.
