Whereas the biography recounts the life of an individual woman artist, the essay collection offers a series of detailed investigations into women's engagement with the visual arts, addressing the activities of female patrons as well as artists. Whereas once feminist art history celebrated individual achievements made in the face of male oppression, the emphasis now is rather on investigating, on the one hand, the ways in which women were able to negotiate a cultural space for themselves without necessarily challenging patriarchal values, and, on the other, the typically hostile and fearful reactions that female engagement in and influence on artistic practice elicited from male artists, critics, and others.
