Institutions, Globalisation and Empowerment, by Kartik C. Roy and Jorn Sedaris, is reviewed. Globalisation and Empowerment brings together a variety of scholars from different countries and disciplines to examine how institutions influence the process of empowering people and how globalization affects institutions. Despite the mixed evidence presented in the book, and the recognition that the relationship between globalization, institutions, and empowerment is complex, in the last part of the book the editors conclude that globalization has had positive effects on the world economy by promoting growth and increasing the incomes of the poor. They present partial evidence regarding absolute convergence, declines in infant mortality for some developing nations, and increases in life expectancy. Ultimately they justify their viewpoint on the basis of the Hecksher-Ohlin model of international trade [p. 335], which does not take into account the institutional specificities of trading countries. Globalisation and Empowerment -Italic provides a useful contribution to the emerging literature on institutions and economic development.
