This paper traces the changing constitution of wilderness in two books by Sharon Butala, The Perfection of the Morning (1994) and Wild Stone Heart (2000), arguing that Butala's narrative moves from a reductive "wilderness plot" to a more inclusive "deep map." Where the former book constructs prairie space through essentialized divisions between nature and culture, urban and rural, Wild Stone Heart depicts how even "wilderness" is overwritten by cultural and political forces.
