The writings of Marie Chauvet are credited by many literary critics as paving the way for the modern novel in Haiti. However, her work has not always been widely accepted, especially since she seems to have upset every reader of every political ideology. Her stories are filled with fear and violence, and her aim is to expose the psychological and physical effects of the terror that has occurred around her politically. Her words are cultural criticisms on the individual, and on society.
