• Tenure was refused despite the fact that Sherley had won a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for adult stem-cell research and had been the subject of a glowing article by the MIT News Service on the importance of his work. [...] Philip Phillips, now a tenured professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, told Science magazine, "Judgments are constantly being made whether you are aware of them or noL and your idiosyncrasies stand out much more if you are black than if you are white." When confronted with widespread support for the Sherley position, the MIT administration simply stonewalled and took no further action.\n They pledged to either conduct an external arbitration of my charges of racial discrimination and obstruction or to grant me tenure based on the admission of unfair racial discrimination.
