  • Mystery fiction has been evolving since its inception as a genre and women authors have always played a prominent role, not only as popular authors, but also as the creator of successful women detective characters. In late 1970s, the women authors modified the hard-boiled tradition once dominated by male authors and attracted their share of the detective fiction reading market. They have found a new voice, one that allows for a woman's perspective to break through the rigidity of the traditional hard-boiled formula genre. These new women's voices in mystery fiction project the issues and reality of middle-class America from which the authors come. The plethora of issues raised in these novels reflects the pluralism of contemporary America. And while these issues are common detective fiction tropes on the one hand, they explore new aspects of how women successfully function in this specific society on the other hand. Moreover, this new subengenre discusses social issues such as illegal workers, child pornography, and abusive husbands that underlie the murder investigation and women's role in society. The women protagonists contend with concerns that touch real twenty-first century women's lives on a daily basis.
