• This article offers an overview of an indispensable source that helps to provide a better understanding of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred vocal works: contemporary commentaries on hymns. Martin Rössler has assigned the first half of the eighteenth century as a period full of "early hymnological research" (Frühzeit hymnologischer Forschung)-a time when people thought carefully about the history and meanings of hymns, sacred songs, and chorales. Compositional peculiarities and features of chorale settings should always be compared with this source, which often yields new insights with regard to structural design and intent. This hypothosis will be exemplarily employed with the aria "Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn" from the cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4.
