When he renounces Desdemona in one of two Shakespearean plays woven into the fabric of The Nature of Blood, Barbantio, with his early modern callousness, illustrates the thematic connection between Othello and Caryl Phillips' late modern novel. As elucidated by Shakespeare and challenged by Phillips's revisionism, the lost child plot becomes a vehicle for the imposition of a male order that renders gender as well as race key in the player's drive for mastery.
