• Born of interactions among several vernacular music traditions, nascent jazz (or "hot" music) may have emerged in some form in any of numerous places where those styles were being combined in the later nineteenth century. The cover of the Nov 15, 1890 issue of the weekly "New Orleans Mascot" features an illustration in which a band is shown on a New Orleans street playing what might be this "hot" style of music, much to the dismay of passersby.
