Despite the most operable solution, to face the problem of building systems standardization seems to be the assignment of one code to each element of the model, the appliance of a standard classification system appears more useful when we need to classify every instance in different way depending on the phase, the function and the plurality of relations that link it with the whole building system. The aim of this research is to underline how it shall be possible to formulate a discipline for the standard management of the classification process that arises from the mediation of the operative issues related to the difficulties of implementation of the classification systems with the optimization chances offered by information technology applied to AEC industry and, in particular, to building information modelling. The standard, indeed: - consider and classify all the elements that take part in the whole life cycle of the building, giving the same importance to processes and products; - is a faceted classification system that lead to describe the building system from various point of view, in the same way if they are considered as separated or taken together by the different professionals involved in the process; - is compatible with other classification systems because it is founded on the structure of the ISO 12006-2 "Building construction - Organization of information about construction works - Part 2: On the other side the research on the possibility to map performance simulations in the model starting from output generated by engineering applications (in this case FEM structural models) has a certain maturity and permits to create a knowledge base that, once shared, can qualify design process and building systems.
