Methods The data for this study are taken from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care (MIMIC) database, with >58,000 total visits to ICUs from 2001-2012 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. Results The primary outcome is the EOL intensity index, which assigns one point each for the use of mechanical ventilation, medications to raise blood pressure (pressors), and dialysis in the last week of life.
