The Arterial-Venous oxygen content difference (A-VO2 diff) and Respiratory Quotient (RQ = VCO2/VO2) are means of assessing the adequacy of oxygen delivery and overall metabolic state. Conclusion: Lactate is not correlated with either A-V O2 diff or RQ in septic patients by cross-sectional analysis suggesting that elevated lactates in sepsis may not be attributable to anaerobic metabolism, or the mismatch between oxygen delivery and consumption This finding raises important questions regarding the paradigm of treating elevated lactates with interventions aimed at raising DO2.
