This essay aims to discuss the changes to the water cycle from various perspectives, in particular quantitative changes in water budget components, as well as the development of our understanding in regards to water cycle mechanisms. Some of these changes are demonstrated and discussed using examples from the Krkonose Mts starting from the last glacial period to anthropogenic changes demonstrated by large scale water management activities, land-use changes, climate change and other issues, e.g. artificial snow generation. Finally, conclusions are presented regarding possible future priorities for a sustainable water cycle and management.
