Like the biblical Salome, they made strategic choices about what to reveal and what to hide as they engaged in a complicated dance with American popular culture. According to Ginsberg, Yezierska saw Stokes as "a new kind of Salome, a dangerous, subversive, defiant, and inspiring woman who wielded feminine power to impose her will and achieve her goals" (56). Foregoing the Jewish charities that assisted Stokes, Yezierska, and Levien, Goudal lived at the Martha Washington hotel, taking up clerical work before breaking into silent films in the early 1920s. Marriage to Harold Grieve, a gay interior decorator, provided Goudal with the financial stability that Stokes sacrificed. Ginsberg concludes by discussing the novel and the movie, invoking a host of cultural references, including Edith Wharton's House of Mirth and Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase."
