  • Increasing bandwidth demand in optical communication systems has led to significant research efforts in manufacturing optical fibre. Thulium (Tm) doped fibres have a lot of attention due to possible wide range of applications. Aluminium is a primary co-dopant to reduce clustering effects of rare-earth ions, Al nanoparticle and Al salt have been studied in erbium (Er) doped fibre. Assumptions are made with regard to Tm as rare earth in silica glass host with nanoparticle network modifiers. The objective in this investigation is to fabricate and characterize two thulium-doped fibres with Al nanoparticle and Al salt as co-dopants. Fibres were manufactured using MCVD and a novel in-situ solution doping technique. Both preforms were characterized for Al concentration, distribution profiles. Fibres absorption and emission spectra are measured to study Tm presence. Conventional MCVD equipment was used with a designed and developed in-situ solution doping technique to fabricate the preforms that were pulled into fibre using conventional drawing tower.
