Translation from original language as provided by authorThis thesis probed the storage mode of the past-tense forms of the English irregular verbs in the mental lexicon of the proficient C-E bilinguals (Chinese-English bilinguals). All the subjects were the third-grade graduate students majoring in English of Sichuan University. Three experiments have been done to investigate this issue, one probing it from the facet of word cognition and the other two from the facet of word production. It is to find out whether the past-tense forms of the irregular verbs are of whole-word representation or of morpheme-based representation and whether they are stored on the same level as their correspondent original forms. And these experiments can also find out whether the past-tense forms of the irregular verbs and that of the regular verbs are of the same storage mode and thus testify the reasonableness of the connectionist models and the dual-mechanism models.
