First we encounter four papers that look at Heart of Darkness from ecocritical and postcolonial perspectives. Thomas Jackson Rice addresses three themes of Conrad scholarship in his treatment of Typhoon: Conrad's attitude towards contemporary popular literature and its reading public; the historical context of his fiction, in this case, the Boxer Rebellion; and Conrad's use of the epistolary form. Another example is Rice's argument that MacWhirr's letters, so uninspiring to his wife, are evidence of an "'ordinary' mind" that makes him akin to certain popular ("puffed") authors and audiences Conrad scorned.
