  • When in 1969, Kate Millet recuperated Money's and Stoller's usage of gender as distinct from biological sex, her focus on the fluidity of gender aligned gender with sex role socialization, but she did not use the term explicitly to denote hierarchy.7 From the 1960s into the 1980s, feminists increasingly addressed power relations among women and men through a sex/gender dichotomy.8 Notably, Gayle Rubin, in her influential 1975 text "The Traffic in Women: Notes on the 'Political Economy' of Sex," first used "gender" to address systemic hierarchical relations of power: she defined what she terms the "sex/gender system" as a "set of arrangements by which a society transforms biological sexuality into products of human activity.\n" Translation theory needs to address the context of production of the texts not merely in terms of local significance of individual words, but also its wider positioning within the matrix of text production. In the case at hand, the asymmetrical power relationship between the development of feminist theory in the Anglophone and Francophone communities of practice calls attention to the need to resist the unilateral forces of globalization and to recognize the multiple ways that local social, political, economic, and cultural realities mitigate these homogenizing forces.
