• The article explores the assumption that the 19 century tradition of aesthetics following Johann Friedrich Herbart provides a conceptual and notional basis for ›classic‹ 20 century structuralism. This proto-structuralism, which is hitherto unexplored, rests upon theoretical innovations that concern, on the one hand, the temporalization and processing of the form concept and, on the other hand, its foundation in form-related connections and differences. Furthermore, this interrelation traces a history of theory that records the existence of theoretical complexities in different ›places‹ and at different times - with the result that formal aesthetics and 20 century structuralisms are ›only‹ different occurrences of this same complexity.
