Adapting Identity: Jewish American Narratives from the Page to the Screen" is the first book-length study of Jewish American literature adapted into film. This dissertation exposes how literary and cinematic versions of the same narrative function as perfect instruments for examining the discourse between Jewish authors and American filmmakers, whose shared work has reflected and shaped American Jewishness. Authors construct complex, introspective representations of the Jewish American experience, whereas the filmmakers responsible for the cinematic adaptations flatten the Jewish elements and propagate a particular version of Jewishness in response to political, social, and economic circumstances. By questioning how authors and filmmakers have formulated Jewish identity in select works published and produced from 1945 to 1975, this project reveals what cultural and political forces were most instrumental in the evolution of Jewish American identity during this time period.
