  • This investigation looks at fertility change in Canada from 1947 to 2011 through the application of propositions drawn from sociological and economic theories of post-war fertility trends in post-industrial societies. Two principal questions are addressed. From an economic perspective the study examines the role of male average income from wages and female economic opportunities (a composite factor based on female average income from wages and female employment) in explaining aggregate fertility change over this 65-year period. From a sociological standpoint the research explores the effect of religious secularization (indexed by percentage of population reporting no religious affiliation) on fertility fluctuations. The econometric model specified assumes these variables affect fertility with a lag of two years. Consistent with economic theory, changes in female economic opportunities have strong negative effects on the total fertility rate while male income exerts a weak positive effect. And as expected under the postulates of sociological modernization theory, religious secularization is inversely associated with fertility. These results highlight the combined importance of economic and sociological change in accounting for post-War fertility change in Canada.
