  • In the case of the Spanish tradition, they have examined existing historical documents and literary references to showcase the actors' and actresses' contractual commitments to rehearse at the lodging of the head of their company, the need for two to three weeks to rehearse each new play, the way actors studied their individual parts and participated in group rehearsals, the private nature of rehearsals to prevent other companies from accessing the plays, and related matters. If the theatrum mundi metaphor is intrinsic to the Baroque world view, the way rehearsal is portrayed on the Spanish stage of the time, far from representing "a theocentric and moral view of the world" (O'Connor 279), subjects pre-existent texts to the disorder of theatrical reality and comedic metatheatricality, troubles the stability of identity, stresses rupture and incompletion as traits underlying both textual and personal interactions, and allows the audience to partake in a voyeuristic experience of what is usually concealed from it, all of which highlight the modernity of the Spanish Comedia nueva.
