When the author was asked to support a conference on the fear of art, it was impossible, really, to say no. Censorship is so pressing a problem, and so defies comprehension, that as a funder of the arts she was drawn, as were others, to this effort to claim and cover the subject. It was important to help make it happen. However, when she was asked to moderate a panel at the conference, it was a very different question. She is a collector and an arts education activist; she is not a scholar or a critic. But she believe that those of them outside the academy must be active in this inquiry. Artists, curators, arts practitioners, students, enthusiasts from the many layers of art life must join scholars in confronting the fear of art. This conference inspired the many forces that animate the art of their time to examine the forces that inhibit the art of their time.
