Eric Voegelin was one of the founding fathers of political science in Western Germany. However, because of his devastating criticism of modernity, he is rarely refered to nowadays. Nonetheless, contemporary political science interested in subjects such as political symbolism, collective identity, memory, beliefs or emotions could profit from Voegelin's farflung work. This article engages in a comparative reading of Voegelin and the French philosopher Claude Lefort in order to show that important insights of Voegelin's work can be salvaged for political science without having to accept his understanding of a pathological modernity.
