• There were a number of new sentencing guidelines which came into effect in February (theft, health and safety offences, corporate manslaughter, food and safety hygiene offences; as well as updated/revised guidelines on sex offences and magistrates' courts sentencing powers). Then the Sentencing Council's (short) revised Allocation Guideline came into effect on 1 March and the Definitive Guideline on Robbery comes into force on 1 April 2016. This may add to the pressure on judges to increase sentence lengths. Here, Padfield talks about the Sentencing Guidelines of England and Wales.
