  • Because of her wide-ranging sources, Matei-Chesnoiu is often required to introduce and contextualize unfamiliar materials, which makes this monograph a useful overview of cognate approaches with the potential to illuminate new facets of early modern spatiality. Drawing on original practices scholarship and also theorists of performance familiar to Shakespeareans-Joseph Roach's surrogation, Richard Schechner's restored behavior, and Pierre Bourdieu's habitus among them-Vidler situates the revival of Spanish Golden Age drama within a context as recognizable to Shakespeareans as Shakespeare's not-very-exotic representations of Vienna or Verona would have been to his London audiences. Rising above internecine squabbles within the humanities, Vidler concludes her monograph with a powerful and (in my view) utterly convincing statement about the value of our work in an institutional context that increasingly rewards cognitive, quantitative, and other quasi-scientific ways of approaching plays.
