Yeats had hoped to stress the horse as hunter and was disappointed that the Agriculture Ministry had altered the design: "The horse, as first drawn, was more alive than the later version, for when the hind legs were brought more under the body and the head lowered, in obedience to technical opinion, it lost muscular tension; we passed from the open country to the show ground. [...]it is only slightly larger than the three pence and the farthing. [...]it is because of their death and the manner in which the poet confronts death that the poem initiates an expressive coming to terms with death, transforming it into the living form of the poem.
