During the 2 years that I spent at medical school dissecting a cadaver from head to toe, I remember marvelling at the bravery of the man stuck beneath my cack-handed knife, who had so generously donated his body to medical science, and realising something inconsistent in my own thinking: I have never believed in an afterlife and yet the idea of my bones not finding a peaceful resting place after death really disturbs me.
