• At some point between the author's current and former assignment, several decades ago, to the Institutional Review Board, the language requirement for consent forms changed from that which could be understood by laypersons to that at a sixth-grade reading level. From time to time, he peruses institutional informational documents and distressed at the breaches in fundamental grammatical rules. Recently, a reviewer of a manuscript objected to the word evince. The objection was that most readers would not know its meaning. The author feels comforted, however, that somewhere there must be a like-minded person when he enters that rare checkout aisle bearing the sign 10 items or fewer.
