The hospitality of the prefaces is striking and makes room for new guests all the time, as recent novels like Edan Lepucki's California (2014) and Lionel Shriver's Big Brother (2013) demonstrate.\n Even in contemplating a minor story like "The Private Life," the writing bleeds into the fiction, nudges us to sense something of Robert Browning's "double personality" in, for instance, Adam Verver (268). James charts Browning's "two quite distinct and 'watertight' compartments"-the public personality of "the fresh sane man, illustrious and undistinguished," and the private personality, "silent and unseen," capable of "deep and brave and intricate things" (266-67).
