• In this paper, I report on one of the linguistic items that has been an important inquiry of research in discourse analysis: discourse markers. The different labels given to these elements may be due to the discourse maker under examination, to its linguistic function in the discourse, or to the researcher's theoretical point of view. In the United States, which is our context of study, few studies have researched the impact of English in the Spanish spoken by Spanish heritage speakers with regard to the use of discourse markers. Current research have arrived to the conclusion that sociolinguistic variables such as speaker's generational adscription and level of bilingualism correlate significantly with the use of discourse markers such 'entonces' (so), 'tú sabes' (you know) and 'como' (like). Thus, the purpose of the present article is not only to report on current research but to encourage more empirical investigation on this topic which could contribute significantly to a better understanding of language contact phenomena.
