Aim
To evaluate the effect of a dental education program for firefighters addressing knowledge on the management of avulsed teeth.
Subject and methods
The intervention study involved the administration of a questionnaire for 90 firefighters. The questionnaire was administered before the lecture (T
0
), immediately after the lecture (T
1
), and 6 months after the lecture (T
2
). McNemar’s test was used to compare answers of the different evaluation times (
p
< 0.05).
Results
Improvements over the baseline evaluation were found in the second and third evaluations regarding the concepts of avulsion and replantation, conduct in cases of avulsion (replantation), ability to perform replantation, storage media and handling of the avulsed tooth prior to replantation. An increase in uncertainty was found with regard to performing replantation of an avulsed tooth between T
1
and T
2.
Conclusion
A lecture can significantly enhance knowledge regarding the correct measures to be taken in cases of tooth avulsion. While the knowledge level of the firefighters remained high 6 months after the educational intervention, some uncertainty was found with regard to performing replantation, demonstrating the decreasing effect of a single education program over time.
