  • The relationship between assessment and technologies has been mostly connected to traditional pedagogical assets, that is assessment within a specific formal learning path. It is less explored the relationship between technologies supporting informal and non-formal learning, through personalized experiences. The emerging Open Digital Badges, which we aim at introducing in this article, can be deemed a technological solution responding to the complex problem of learning assessment and assessment for learning. With the aim of illustrating the relationship between technological affordances and assessment, we introduce the instrument badge, followed by two brief case studies that instantiate its modus operandi and impact. This analysis cast out as conclusions that the potential value of badges, defined at conceptual level and supported by a technological solution for the effective uptake, is only the base leading to more pedagogical experimentation and research.
