• Abstract This work presents a reading of Niebla by Miguel de Unamuno in dialogue with Ortega's theory of razón vital that explores the existence of an intellectual terroir shared by both thinkers with regard to their reflections on the essence of the human being. A driving force of that which will become later known as existentialist thought, Unamuno presents in Niebla a fundamental idea of his work that would also be a pillar of Ortega's raciovitalismo, such as the necessity to responsibly take over one's own existence, so that we become authors of our own lives. The fusion of philosophy and literature in the work of both authors acquires a significance beyond the formal aspect, making explicit what, without a doubt, has been one of the most remarkable innovations of twentieth-century philosophical thought: the discovery of the narrative essence of human existence. Esta reflexión estará muy presente en el pensamiento de Unamuno tal y como se verá en la siguiente sección, haciendo de la muerte de su desdichado protago- nista un acto final y desesperado mediante el cual Augusto Pérez intenta, por fin, hacerse cargo de sí mismo, siendo su propia muerte el sello de autor de una vida que hasta entonces apenas era suya.5 Al no tener naturaleza sino historia, es decir, al no estar dada de antemano, la existencia humana tiene un potencial casi infinito, puede ser cualquier cosa.
