  • 'Part Two: TV and the Absence of Sex' is of truly global scope and contains four chapters concerned with the 'representations of "no-sex" sex' in programmes as varied as the US comedy-drama series Pushing Daisies (2007-09), the 'restricted hardcore' of a number of programmes on the British adult television channel Television X, the Chinese serial Woju [sic] (2009) and the Korean 'trendy drama' My Lovely Sam-Soon (2005).2 These chapters examine 'how the representation of "no-sex" sex can challenge or comply with dominant modes or representations that oscillate between a rigid patriarchal ordering of sexual imagery toward more democratic forms of production, portrayal and reception' (p. xv). Based on the assumption that representations of sex can 'act as a barometer for social mores and attitudes as well as forwarding a progressive or conservative approach to sex, sexual activity and its position in the everyday and public realm' (p. xv) the contributions to Part Two variously explore how the marginalisation of explicit sexual activity raises important questions about the social significance of sex in different cultural contexts. The highlight here is the chapter entitled 'Performance Anxiety and Costume Drama: Lesbian Sex on the BBC' by Amber K. Regis, which situates its discussion of Portrait of a Marriage and Tipping the Velvet very specifically in the historical and socio-cultural contexts of the programmes' production.
