• Errors of translation and the particular aims and prejudices of 19c historians such as Sir Julian Corbett have led to some anachronistic ideas which still confuse discussions of Drake, the navy that defeated the Spanish Armada, and other matters. This analysis separates the three elements of the full-rigged ship, the heavy gun at sea, and the broadside armament, which did not arrive together in the 16c, and were not securely combined until well into the 17c. Elizabethan shipwrights and naval men did not think they were developing prototypes of the future ship of the line, but aimed to develop a sailing warship to beat the galley at its own game, and to supersede the broadside, not invent it.
