When a problem contains more than one unknown function and a corresponding number of differential equations, the contents of the Galerkin method are not necessarily completely clear. This theme is discussed in the paper by considering four example cases: one-dimensional heat conduction, the bending of an Euler–Bernoulli beam, a regenerator problem and an axially moving string problem. A strategy for selection of the proper weighting function is proposed. Some numerical results are presented. Suggestions regarding how a basic finite element course for engineering students might proceed in its initial stages are given.
