The present data excerpts illustrate that speakers have different grammatical, prosodic-vocal and variant-specific possibilities for the staging of foreign speech. Instead of postulating two categorically distinct ways of expressing speech (direct speech vs. indirect speech), it seems more appropriate to start from a continuum ranging from maximum directness to maximum indirection. The classification of the respective utterance on this scale is based on several parameters. Speakers thus have different design options in the construction of foreign speech in everyday conversations, which include not only the traditionally discussed grammatical phenomena (deictic anchoring, syntactic construction and mode use), but also previously neglected phenomena, such as prosodic-vocal ones Procedures and code-witching techniques. As pointed out by Leo Spitzer (1928, 329), many "errors of the linguists" with regard to their analyzes of reproduction are "that they proceeded from written examples, from texts, not from living speech with their intonation. . ".
