• In this article, we treat only the language states south of the Bershear line. In the North, the situation is fundamentally different, above all because a spoken form of the standard language is the usual spoken language of the great majority of the population, and this is clearly differentiated from the down-to-earth Low German dialects. Unlike in Central and Upper German space, there is no continuum of varieties between the basic and standard language, as shown below, cf. Schuppenhauer / Werlen (1983) and Stellmacher (1990).
