• African American children have long been overrepresented in the American child welfare foster care system. While many children exit the system through adoption annually, many await homes to provide the love, care, and nurturance needed for a thriving life. Research has shown children in foster care and available for adoption for extended periods tend to be minority, older, and have special needs. This study explored the role of the African American church community in the lives of African American children in foster care and available for adoption through interviews and focus groups.
