Research shows commensurately low skills in struggling college readers' word reading ability and aspects of general linguistic comprehension ability. This paper uses the Matthew effects theory (the rich get richer/the poor get poorer) to explain the sources of these poor skills and to suggest research-supported instructional strategies that may help trigger positive Matthew effects (rich get richer) in struggling college readers.
