[...]the musical situation at Alpha helps to illuminate the historical problem of European imperialism, and its impact on the development of folk and creative arts. According to Howe, recruitment efforts in the colonies during the early twentieth century were established upon widespread propaganda campaigns that further reminded blacks of their obligation to the British Empire and appealed to their desire for the same rights and recognitions so freely granted to whites.41 Within this effort, various institutions helped to carry forth a message of growing patriotism and allegiance.
