  • Adrian Scott, John Howard Lawson, and Albert Maltz were three of the storied Hollywood Ten, screenwriters who refused to bend under questioning in 1947 by the House Committee on On-American Activities. This three-level analysis of audio recordings of their memorial services offers insights into images of the three, rhetorical practices of their community, and traditions of the American left. First, reviews of history, biography, and circumstance ground and contextualize the study. Second, Kenneth Burke's theories on representation illuminate the memorials' essential protagonists, narratives, and consequent rhetorical utility. Third, Walter R. Fisher's motive view of communication points to underlying motivations and tactics. Findings suggest that the memorialized images of Scott, Lawson, and Maltz support Hollywood's left community by providing justification, inspiration, and admonition. Implications for the rhetoric of dissenting communities emerge in the light of material and rhetorical parallels between these three champions and ancient Celtic tribal heroes.
