  • In this passage wine serves both positive and negative ends. Because the Qur'an is such a complex text, most Muslims turn to other texts, written by those knowledgeable in Islamic sciences, for guidance in daily matters. First made famous by Abu Nuwas (750?-813?), one of the greatest classical Arabic poets of all time, poems within the wine song tradition focus on love, nature and the sheer pleasure of drinking wine.9 This genre continued through to the Iberian Peninsula with Ibn Quzman, who is considered the undisputed master of the vernacular zajal.10 He travelled extensively through Andalusia and died in 1160, the year the Almohads besieged Cordoba and defeated the Almoravids. [...]social identity is defined and asserted through difference. By examining distinct artifacts from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, we begin to understand the economic, social and political dimensions of how wine contributed to the formation of Morisco identity. Because Spanish Muslim history indicates a definite, though perhaps erratic, presence of wine in Muslim law, economy and culture, we can conclude that wine for Moriscos is both an extension of their past and an indication of assimilation (or feigned assimilation) in their present and future.
