• The number of promising research projects getting shelved across the US is rising dramatically. The core National Cancer Institute (NCI) budget has been stagnant for nearly a decade, part of the overall cutbacks in NIH funding. The applicant success rate for NIH grantees has fallen to a record low of 17%. It's lower at NCI, where the success rate is down to 14%, according to director Harold Varmus, MD.
